On-time deliveries are a key performance metric for your supply chain and transportation providers.\u00a0 However, it can be really confusing to measure and manage.\u00a0 Here are some key things you should understand before defining an on-time metric.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no such thing as \u201con-time\u201d<\/h2>\n

The first thing you have to know about \u201con-time\u201d is there really is no such thing.\u00a0 \u201cOn-time\u201d is more of a concept than a reality.\u00a0 This may shock you, but here are some examples that make \u201con-time\u201d difficult to measure.<\/p>\n

  1. Ordered to pick up on the 5th<\/sup> and deliver on the 7th<\/sup>.\u00a0 However, it wasn\u2019t ready to be picked up on the 5th<\/sup>, but was ready on the 6th<\/sup> and consequently got delivered on the 8th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Was the carrier late?<\/li>\n
  2. Same scenario, but order picked up on time, then got stuck in customs for 2 days through no fault of the carrier.\u00a0 Was the carrier late?<\/li>\n
  3. Same scenario, but then there was a blinding snow storm where the highway got shut down and the carrier could not travel.\u00a0 Was the carrier late?<\/li>\n
  4. Same scenario, but picked up on time, but when they arrived to deliver, the receiving department closed early for their weekly staff meeting and the freight couldn\u2019t deliver till the next day.\u00a0 Was the carrier late?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I could go on, but if you\u2019ve spent any time in the transportation industry you could probably list 100 different scenarios that you would consider late, or not late, etc.\u00a0 The crux of the problem is your trying to put a static measure on something that\u2019s fluid.\u00a0 Pick up and delivery times change constantly because of all kinds of factors.\u00a0 Trying to pin down on-time\/not-on-time is an oversimplification of a bigger problem.<\/p>\n

    How you really manage \u201con-time\u201d<\/h2>\n

    First, you have to recognize the bigger picture.\u00a0 There are numerous parties involved and numerous causes for scheduling changes.\u00a0 The key to managing this picture is deciding on what to measure.\u00a0 One of the best ways is to just measure the all reasons for re-scheduling an order.<\/p>\n
